Henry Stern, that wild and crazy
New York City Park's Commissioner has said:

Well, do
we have park! 300,000 acres of mountains,
trails, ponds, lakes, streams, waterfalls, real wild animals,
fresh air and sky.
And you don't have to share
it with millions of people!
Come to the Catskills for exercise,
relaxation, beautiful views, quiet and fresh air that travels
all the way from the Arctic Circle without a single interruption!
Pure, fresh air that is better than any wine you've ever
tasted.
Our 300,000 acre park is divided
into Wilderness and Wild Forest Areas. Made up of a unique
conglomeration of private and public lands, The Wilderness
areas all contain at least 10,000 acres of uniterrupted
and unspoiled forest and mountainside. Foot travel is the
only way to traverse the Wilderness, all motorized and wheeled
(bicycles) vehicles are prohibited. Even the DEC must walk.
The Wild Forests are designed
to provide a higher degree of human recreation; they
resemble regular parks. Mountain bikes and snowmobiles
are allowed in these areas. There are usually more
people here; they are less remote than the Wilderness.
So come to a real park and experience
the real outdoors. Only 2 1/2 hours from mid-town Manhattan
(3 hours if the traffic out of the city is heavy). You'll
be amazed and grateful that all this beauty is so very close
to your front door.
