$4 adults, $3 seniors and students and $1 for children 5-12. The tour
includes the "Coping with Life's Necessities" exhibit. The
holiday season of the 18th century did not focus on Christmas Day
as it does for many today. Instead, in colonial and early Albany it
appears to have been viewed as an entire season of celebration, probably
extending from St. Nicholas Eve (December 5) to Twelve Night, the
Feast of the Epiphany, (January 6). This month-long period began and
ended with Dutch traditions and was filled with a combination of Dutch
and English customs including hearty eating and drinking, entertaining,
offering seasonal salutations and good fellowship. Decorations in
the home were sparce, while churches received some greenery to mark
the season. |
