Completed in 1898, the residence was designed by the firm of McKim, Mead, and White. The building is an early example of steel frame construction; Indiana limestone forms the facade. It was to remain in the Vanderbilt family for over four decades as their center for entertaining in the Spring and Fall. The cost of construction and furnishings was nearly two million dollars. The original Vanderbilt furnishings are on display.
