augerties
is an antique shopper's treasure chest waiting to be opened,
right in the Mid-Hudson Valley! There are over 30 shops filled
with an exceptional range of fine quality antiques and collectibles.
Whether you're looking for the best in Mission Oak or 19th
Century European furniture, pieces to fill in a collection,
that perfect piece to complete a room or just beginning to
experience the never-ending joys of treasure hunting, Saugerties
must be your first stop.
Antique dealers first gravitated
to this picturesque town over 25 years ago. Purchasing their
wares from local and distant estates, auctions and markets
in New England, Canada and New York State, each shop is different
in its decor and offerings -- there are items to amuse, items
for practical use and there are items for serious investment.
Indeed, locally, it is thought of as the town where "Dealers
shop".
Located at the foot of the
Catskill Mountains and on the shores of the Hudson River, Saugerties
is one of the most attractive communities on the river. Just
100 miles north of Manhattan, the 8 block commercial section
has been designated as a Historic District on the National Register
of Historic Places and is home to over 30 antique shops. Beautiful
old stone and mid to late 19th century brick buildings framed
by huge old trees and surrounded by lovely gardens, sit on the
hills overlooking the river.
Saugerties is a walking town,
so park your car and take a stroll down Main, Market and Partition
Streets where most of the antiques and craft shops are found.
There are plenty of good restaurants to take a break from shopping
in and there are fine country inns in which to spend the night
-- you'll want to stay a couple of days in this delightful little
village. Once you've gotten acquainted with Saugerties, head
south on Route 9W to visit the antiques stores on top of the
hill and west to see the shops on Route 32. The oldest lighthouse
on the Hudson River is a half mile walk from the center of the
Historic District. In the fall there are the Garlic and Mum
Festivals. In the winter it's a half hour drive up the mountain
to several major ski resorts.
So shop in Saugerties
before you shop anywhere else. The selection is wide, the
quality is high and the prices are very fair. |

When
you visit Saugerties, make sure to visit the Saugerties Lighthouse!
One of the few on the Hudson River that you can actually walk
out to. It's a pleasant stroll through a nature preserve out
to the lighthouse, located mid-river! It's a pleasant adventure
back into the 19th century glory of shipping on the Hudson
River.
