8 mile long Greenwood
Lake straddles the NY & NJ borders providing extraordinary
jet skiing, water skiing and boating enjoyment. This
panorama was taken from the docks of Willow Point
Marina on the East Shore in the Village of Greenwood
Lake.
The largest lake in downstate
NY, Greenwood Lake is nestled between Sterling Mountain
on the east and Mount Peter on the west. Formerly
known as "Long Pond", Greenwood Lake has been a resort
community since the mid 19th century, attracting visitors
to it's shores to escape New York City. Now, more
a bedroom commuter community than a resort, Greenwood
Lake still offers guests the opportunity to get away
from the city and enjoy all manner of water sports.
But be warned, there are virtually no accommodations
available any longer. Greenwood Lake has turned, instead,
into a day trip destination just an hours drive north
of the city.
Almost all of the marinas
around Greenwood Lake can rent you jet skis and boats
to get you out on the water in high style. Lakeside
delis and restaurants offer docking to patrons and
all offer outside decks overlooking the lake where
you can enjoy a leisurely meal or just sit and watch
the sun set over the mountains.
On the north tip of Greenwood
Lake is the little Village of Greenwood Lake where
you can get all the supplies you might need for your
day on the water. Every October the village also hosts
its annual Oktoberfest, shutting down the main street
turning it over to hawkers, amusements and family
entertainment. Throughout the warm months, the Village
hosts many events of interest, like the Boat Parade
around Chapel Island, flea markets, holiday parades
and more. |
