Known as the most beautiful
of the Great Estate of the Hudson Valley, Montgomery
Place sits perched high above the mighty Hudson River
looking west toward the Catskill Mountains. Currently
under the care and protection of Historic Hudson Valley,
Montgomery Place is a picturesque trip back into 18th
and 19th century America.
Originally built in 1802,
Montgomery Place was the home of Janet Livingston
Montgomery, widow of General Richard Montgomery, the
first hero of the American Revolution. The home was
redesigned mid-century in the Classical Revival traditions
by Andrew Jackson Downing in the picturesque style.
Extensive gardens, follies and lawns were incorporated
into the design. But none more attractive and more
inspiring than the view created from the west side
of the house.
From the west terraces
of the gardens one has an unobstructed view across
miles of the Hudson Valley with the Catskill Mountains
forming the imposing backdrop. Below the Hudson River
lazily wanders into and out of view between the large
trees. The lawns pull you into the scene carrying
you out into the landscape.
Located in Annandale-on-Hudson
in northern Dutchess County, Montgomery place is an
ideal destination to discover the beauty and majesty
of the Hudson Valley. Take a picnic, sit under the
trees and relax as you soak in the incomparable view. |
