Built at the height of
the Guilded Age, Vanderbilt Mansion perches on the
very edge of the bluff overlooking the Hudson River.
From the back portico you are treated to an unparalleled
view of the Valley stretching to the south and north,
and across into Ulster County.
Hyde Park, as the grounds
are formally known, is not a natural setting by any
stretch of the imagination. All is planned, planted
and structured. The park is a supreme example of the
Romantic Landscape, including the carefully structured
views of the river and valley. Your experience of
the vistas is a planned experience, a romantic vision
of the natural world.
Being a National Park,
the Vanderbilt Mansion and park are open year round
daily until sunset. Take a little time and stroll
down the carriage roads to the rivers edge, bring
a picnic and a blanket and plant yourself down on
the lawns overlooking the river. Take the moment to
appreciate a style of landscaping created to heighten
your appreciation of and color your viewing experience
of the natural world. |
