The history and prominence of West Point is legendary and its role in the formation of the United States precedes the American Revolution. West Point's tactical position and geographic importance were pivotal to the Patriot's cause and proved to be the hub around which the American Revolution turned. It was never lost during the Revolution and proved its importance in binding the Northern Colonies of New England to the Mid-Atlantic and Southern Colonies, maintaining open trade routes allowing raw goods and manufactured goods to continue to flow.

West Point Military Academy, located at West Point, is the oldest military academy in America. Visitors are restricted and are asked to go to the Visitor Information Center upon arrival. The Center is open daily from 9:00 to 4:45 and is located a few hundred yards south of the main gate. Guided coach tours of West Point are available for a small fee.

The West Point Museum at Pershing Center is open seven days a week, from 10:30 to 4:15. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. No admission, donations are accepted. The Museum has six new exhibition galleries which include the history of West Point and Corps of Cadets and a Small and Large Weapons Gallery.

The public is also invited to attend the many concerts and performances held on the post, ranging from theatrical presentations in Eisenhower Hall to outdoors concerts of the Cadet Band in the amphitheater located at Trophy Point. Check at the Visitor Center for a schedule of events.
