Knox's Headquarters State Historic Site, the 1754 John Ellison House, is located less than a ten minute drive from the New Windsor Cantonment and is open Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day, and at other times by appointment.

For most of the 18th century and into the 19th century, the Ellison family had important commercial dealings in milling and trade. From their mill on Silver Stream, flour was shipped down the Hudson River to New York City and the West Indies. During the Revolutionary War, the house was used as quarters for high-ranking officers like Major Generals Henry Knox and Horatio Gates.

Today, remains of the Ellison mill, with traces of the underground racecourse by Silver Stream, and the Jane Colden Native Plant Sanctuary, with over 100 kinds of wild flowers, may be visited on this 49 acre site.

Knox's Headquarters is a place to discover history. Tours and workshops offer hands-on and interactive experiences that enable students and other groups to explore how the Ellisons and other families of the mid-Hudson Valley lived 200 years ago.
