Breakneck Ridge ascends dramatically from the very depths of the Hudson River, forming a nearly vertical spine tapering slowly as it rises to the east. Forming the eastern pillar of the North Gate of the Hudson Highlands and the spine of the Appalachian Mountain chain as they run from west to east, the mighty Hudson has over eons of time carved its channel directly through the mountains forming Breakneck Ridge on the east and Storm King Mountain on the west. As a location for hiking, Breakneck Ridge is a gateway spot for exploring the Hudson Highlands State Park. Park your car along Route 9D and find one of the marked trail entrances. On the north, the trail ascends steeply up the northern face, to the south, a more gradual and circuitous route reaches the top. Along the way, several other trails intersect leading you off into the splendid Hudson Highlands State Park, a rustic environment accessible only by trail.
