Huguenot Street holds the distinction of being the "oldest street in America with its original houses". Huguenot Street, a national historic landmark, is located on a slight promontory above the banks of the Wallkill River at the western edge of the Village of New Paltz. The site compromises a collection of house museums with construction dates from 1692 through 1890. The settlement was originally the focus of a 39,683 acre Royal Patent granted to the French refugees on May 26, 1677. The homes are furnished with heirloom and period pieces that reflect their multi-generational family ownership. Included at the site are five Colonial era stone houses, a Federal period house, and a late Victorian house. Also, the French Church and burying ground, a library, carriage museum, museum, gift shop and picnic facilities. Adjacent to the site is the Huguenot Trail and Wildlife Sanctuary.

A delightful shaded walk along the D&H Canal as it passes through High Falls. Start by getting a brochure from the D&H Canal Museum around the corner, then head out to the highway and the Depuy Canal House. Next to the Canal House you will find the starting point of the trail. The trail takes you along the west side of the canal, past five still intact stone locks in various states of disrepair. You will be astonished by the craftsmanship of the stone masons in cutting the perfectly fitting blocks. The trail is shaded and a fairly easy stroll. Unfortunately, it is not very handicapped accessible. At the end of the trail, follow the roads back around to the D&H Canal Museum.

An afternoon spent strolling High Falls takes you from the intrigue of discovering antiques to the splendor of dangling your feet in a rushing mountain stream. Start off at the D&H Canal Museum, then stroll the Five Locks Walk starting from the southern end of the trail. This will lead you into the heart of the Village where you can wander among several excellent antiques and curosity shops. Sit in one of the excellent cafes for lunch or enjoy a memorable meal at the Depuy Canal House. Then walk up to the top of the hill, cross the road and walk over to the top of the falls. Maneuver through the pedestrian gate and walk down hill along the paved road. Here you will encounter several interpretive signs explaining the long industrial history of the gorge. When you reach the end, at the fence, head left down the path and out to the stream. The view back up to both the upper and lower falls is excellent, and the bank is full of table rocks where you can slip off your shoes and dangle your feet in the refreshing water.
