1,722 acres of uplands & wetlands forming one of the most important tidal estuaries on the Hudson River. At Tivoli Bays you can enjoy hiking, boating, scenic views, birdwatching, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hunting, fishing and trapping.

Tivoli Bays is a large freshwater wetland complex with 4-foot tides. Tivoli North Bay is a cattail marsh with winding tidal creeks and large, open pools. Tivoli Shout Bay is a shallow wetland cove with mud flats exposed at low tide. During the growing season Tivoli South Bay is covered by floating rosettes of water chestnut. The Tivoli Bay's marshes, islands, tidal swamps and uplands provide permanent and seasonal habitat for killifish, blue crabs, snapping turtle, muskrats, Virginia rails, ospreys, and an occasional bear, among many other species.

Tivoli Bays is part of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve, managed as a field laboratory for research and education about the Hudson River Estuary. The New York State Department Of Environmental Conservation also operates the site as a wildlife management area.

Tivoli Bays extends for two miles along the east shore of the Hudson River between the villages of Tivoli and Barrytown. The Tivoli Bay's site includes two large coves on the east shore of the Hudson River including Tivoli North Bay, a large intertidal marsh, and Tivoli South Bay, a large, shallow cove with mudflats exposed at low tide. The site also includes an extensive upland buffer area bordering North Tivoli Bay; sections of upland shoreline along Tivoli South Bay; Cruger Island and Magdalene Island, two bedrock islands, extensive subtidal shallows, and the mouths of two tributary streams, the Stony Creek and the Saw Kill.

There are three primary access points into the Tivoli Bays State Unique Area:

  • The lesser of the three is located on route 9G between Kidd Lane and Annandale Road. This is a small parking area providing access to trail heads. Located at this access point is an information kiosk showing trails and providing information.
  • On the south end of Tivoli Bays one can access Cruger Island Road via the Bard College Campus, Annandale Road, which takes you out into the preserve. At the end of the road is a small parking area providing handicapped access on a path out to the South Bay scenic overlook. Access to trail heads leading to other areas of the preserve are also accessible.
  • On the north side, along Kidd Lane, is the primary access point. At the entrance is an information kiosk providing a trail map and information on the preserve including trail descriptions. Follow the road and you will come to several parking areas. At the end of the road is a small parking area providing access to a boat launch for small car top boats like canoes and kayaks, motors are not allowed. The path to the launch is fairly steep at the top, so care must be taken in approaching the launch and dock.
Swimming, camping and open fires are not permitted.

Hours of Operation
Open daily dawn to dusk.
